As usual, prophets of doom are out to forecast a gloomy picture on the food front. They conveniently forgot that the import of wheat during the preceding years was to maintain the buffer stock for the rainy season. This year, we have witnessed a bumper crop and the procurement by the government agencies have attained a new height. Therefore, there is no need to be panicky. We have doubled our food grains production since we attained the independence sixty years ago but our rate of population grew at a much higher speed, leading to the food shortage occasionally. Another good news is that as per the preliminary reports of the next census, the population growth has declined compared to the past performance.
